UTM SUCCESSFULLY PRESENTS WRITER MARTA LAMAS ENCABO WITH CONFERENCE ON GENDER EQUITY

As part of its gender equity program, the Universidad Tecnológica de Matamoros presented writer Marta Lamas Encabo to the university community with a lecture on «What do we talk about when we talk about gender?», in which she highlighted the importance of this topic in the public and private life of each person.
The ethnologist from the National School of Anthropology and History and PhD in Anthropology from the Institute of Anthropological Research of the UNAM, was presented to the university community by the rector of the Technological University of Matamoros, José Antonio Tovar Lara.
This important conference was attended by important personalities, including Senator Sandra Luz García Guajardo and local congresswoman-elect Mónica González García; also in attendance were businessmen, women from the maquiladora industry, directors of public and private institutions, among others.
In her presentation, Dr. Lamas spoke about the meaning of gender, which refers to the beliefs, regulations and social attributions about what in a culture are considered the attitudes and aptitudes of men and women.
Among other topics mentioned by Dr. Lamas in her lecture were: the dilemma of gender difference; the gender gap in Mexico and how does the distinction between sex and gender arise?
In this context, the rector of the Matamoros Technological University said that with such events as Dr. Lamas’ presentation, UTM reiterates its commitment to society, to train young people not only in the areas of science, technology and academia, but also in values.
In addition to Dr. Lamas, UTM will also present on August 16 the writer and actress Susana Alexander, with the conference «The Role of Women in 21st Century Mexico» and on August 23, journalist Tere Bermea, with the topic «Gender Equity: A Daily Challenge».
