Last Friday, August 17 of this year, faculty and administrative staff of the Technological University of Matamoros («Universidad Tecnológica de Matamoros») participated in the online conference «How to Innovate Seriously in Universities», given by Dr. Miguel Angel Celis Flores, Coordinator of Technological and Polytechnic Universities.

During the conference, Dr. Celis Flores highlighted the importance of innovation within universities, as well as the importance of research professors within the same institution.

Among the important points highlighted by Dr. Celis Flores were the following:

• Researchers must learn to optimize the process of patenting an innovation project that is useful for the business market.
• Universities should plan to operate efficiently, and thus optimize the processes they have internally.
• Strengthen and manage the infrastructure that universities have, as well as effectively channel young people who have some talent and can be exploited within the institution.
• The reality of companies is far from the role of universities. Those universities should produce innovations that can be of contribution to companies and that these can be more productive.
• Professors, researchers, administrative and operatives end up in their comfort zone caused by the traditional system.
• The regulations of the universities are very rigid and obsolete to be able to operate income from services and technological products.

Dr. Celis Flores mentioned that the most innovative universities today are leading advances in science, developing new technologies and driving new markets and industries, in other words, innovating in earnest.

Out of the ten most INNOVATIVE Universities in Latin America, two belong to Mexico: Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México (UNAM) and Instituto Tecnológico y de Estudios Superiores de Monterrey (TEC de Monterrey). This gives us as a reference that in Mexico it is possible to innovate if we know how to take advantage of the resources and talents that students have in each of the universities.

He also mentioned the areas where universities and organizations can innovate, which are: service, organization, product, processes and marketing, which are areas of opportunity.

Dr. Celis Flores showed the example of the product that a University produces, the alumni. Universities should prepare students in such a way that when they graduate they will be engineers prepared to be operative, but also give them the basics so that they can obtain a position as a manager and why not, as CEO.

Recommendations for researchers:

• Researchers should identify pockets of innovation.
• Innovation must be measurable.
• A culture of innovation is ultimately generated by people.

In conclusion, he highlighted the following:

• Innovation differentiates leaders from others.
• Innovation refers to validating an idea in the market.
• People innovate, not organizations.
• Innovation can take place in companies as well as in universities.
