UTM RECTOR RECEIVES «DIAMOND STAR» AWARD

The International Journalistic Circle presented the «Diamond Star» award to the rector of the Technological University of Matamoros, Universidad Tecnológica de Matamoros, Mr. José Antonio Tovar Lara, in recognition of his professional career and public function, during an event that honored outstanding personalities in the business, educational, artistic, social and communication fields.
Fernando Vigoritto, president of the Círculo Internacional Periodístico said that the event, held at the Centro Cultural y Social Veracruzano A. C. located in Mexico City, was organized to recognize the trajectory of outstanding personalities of our country.
In addition to Eng. José Antonio Tovar Lara, rector of the Technological University of Matamoros, Universidad Tecnológica de Matamoros, the «Diamond Star» was also awarded to personalities from the artistic world, among them, Jorge Ortiz de Pinedo; Yolanda Montez «Tongolele»; actress and producer Karla Barahona; Antulio Jiménez Pons, producer of television programs; actors Antonio de Hud and Edmundo Arizpe; soap opera villain Lilia Aragón, as well as apple painter Martha Chapa.
Businessmen Justo Fernández, of the family that created the Las Americas racetrack, and Francisco Ibarra, of the ACIR group -Asociación de Concesionarios Independientes de Radio- («Association of Independent Radio Concessionaires») were also honored at the event.
Other honorees were: Dr. Iván Lagunes, creator of the Juvenile Court; the publicist Lourdes López Suckermann; Verónica de la Medina de Yúnez, among other personalities.
In thanking the distinction for his professional career and public function, UTM Rector José Antonio Tovar Lara said «I receive this recognition on behalf of Mr. Egidio Torre Cantú, Constitutional Governor of Tamaulipas, since without his support the challenges and projects in which the Technological University of Matamoros has excelled would not have been achieved».
Among the achievements of the UTM are: having 100 percent of its educational programs accredited by external organizations such as CACEI, CACECA, CONAIC and CIEES; obtaining ISO-9001:2008 certification from the Spanish Association for Standardization; and obtaining two awards for educational quality granted by former Secretaries of Public Education, Alonso Lujambio Irazábal and José Angel Córdova Villalobos.
UTM was also certified by: National Instrument, TOEFL, MICROSOFT, iCarnegie, COEPRIS and was recognized by UNESCO as a Friendly School, as well as received the «Guardians of the Gulf» («Guardianes del Golfo») award granted by the Consortium of Marine Research Institutions of the Gulf and the Caribbean -CIIMAR-GOM- and obtained the Ibero-American Award for educational quality.
For four consecutive years, UTM has represented Mexico in robotics world championships held in Anaheim, California and in the state of Kentucky in the United States. It obtained third place in the world robotics tournament held in Honolulu, Hawaii.
Other outstanding lectures included: «Climate Change and its Consequences,» given by Nobel Prize winner in Chemistry, Dr. Mario Molina; «Reflections of an Astronaut,» given by Dr. Rodolfo Neri Vela; «The Hope of a Mexican,» given by Luis Dolado Colosio Riojas; «Strong Youth in Difficult Times,» given by Carlos Cuauhtémoc Sánchez, among others.
Among the technological universities of Tamaulipas, UTM has maintained its leadership in enrollment, career accreditation and sports in recent years. It has an internationalization program that allows its students to carry out technical internships in countries such as France, Canada, the United States, Cuba and Bulgaria.
In terms of infrastructure, it has modern laboratories and state-of-the-art equipment for students’ technological practices. It is worth mentioning the new building for instrumentation laboratories; flexible manufacturing with Catia software -for the design of airframes for Embraer, Boeing and Bombardier airplanes-; the FANUC robot for virtual welding, a manufacturing cell and equipment for machines and mechanisms. It also has the first photovoltaic farm for student internships.
.During the presentation of the «Estrella de Diamante» awards, Fernando Vigoritto, president of the International Journalism Circle, said that each of the award winners are outstanding personalities in Mexico, «they are people who have succeeded and have gone beyond their goals».
