UTM holds traditional contest of Day of the dead Altar
As part of its cultural strengthening programs, the Technological University of Matamoros, Universidad Tecnológica de Matamoros, directed by Rector José Antonio Tovar Lara, held its traditional contest of altars of the dead, involving the university community in this important Mexican custom.
Students from different careers were organized to install more than 35 impressive altars of the dead dedicated to outstanding personalities of art, science, technology and music.
Flowers, papel picado, pan de muerto, candles and incense were some of the elements used by the students in the altars dedicated to personalities such as Diego and Frida Kahlo; to the writer Gabriel García Márquez; to the Niños Héroes; to Nikola Tesla, who was an inventor and the most important promoter of the birth of commercial electricity.
The students also dedicated the altar of the dead to Guillermo González Camarena, who invented a system to transmit color television, and to José Doroteo Arango, better known as Francisco Villa.
With this type of event, the Technological University of Matamoros promotes among its students the strengthening of one of the most important traditions in the country, the «Day of the Dead».
