THE TECHNOLOGICAL UNIVERSITY OF MATAMOROS SIGNS MEMORANDUM OF UNDERSTANDING WITH HOUSTON COMMUNITY COLLEGE SYSTEM

As part of the educational policy of the governor of Tamaulipas, Egidio Torre Cantú, the rector of the Technological University of Matamoros (UTM), José Antonio Tovar Lara, signed a memorandum of understanding with Renee Byas, chancellor of the Houston Community College System (HCCS), which establishes the promotion of joint projects in the areas of research and technological development for the benefit of students.

The Technological University of Matamoros is the first in Tamaulipas and one of the few nationally to sign an agreement of this magnitude with a public college district, such as HCCS, one of the 10 largest in the United States.

The memorandum of understanding between UTM and HCCS establishes cooperation for the educational needs of both universities and maintains mutual exchanges for an international student experience.

The agreement allows the mobility of students and teachers, favors the exchange of projects, as well as the teaching of courses in computer numerical control (CNC) programs, networks and communications, robotics, alternative energies, offshore hydrocarbon extraction, among others.

At the meeting to sign the memorandum of understanding, the HCCS directors agreed to visit the Universidad Tecnológica de Matamoros facilities to get to know the robotics area, which for the second consecutive year has won the Vex Robotics national tournaments, which has allowed it to represent Mexico in the World Robotics Championship held annually in Anaheim, California.

After signing the agreement, UTM representatives headed by the rector, Eng. José Antonio Tovar Lara, as well as HCCS representatives held two days of activities to plan the work agenda in which they will be participating as of today and will continue to do so for an indefinite period of time.

As a result of the meetings with the directors of the Houston Community College System, Dr. Margaret Ford Fisher, president of the Northeast Campus, emphasized her interest in participating with UTM in the student mobility program to train students in topics related to the oil industry, given the importance it represents for this region.

It is important to mention that in the deep waters of the Gulf of Mexico, off the coast of Matamoros, oil fields have been located, so it will be necessary to have specialized professionals from our community.

Also present at the signing of the agreement were Dr. Ricardo Solis, Executive Director of International Initiatives; Dr. Stephen Levey, Associate Vice Chancellor for Instruction; Matias Garza, Director of Operations and Online Instruction; Dr. Genevieve Stevens, Director of Academic Instruction at Central Campus; Dr. Ron Dewlen, Academic Director at Central Campus; and Joe Little, Corporate Director.
