SUCCESSFUL CONFERENCE OF DR. MARIO MOLINA, PRESENTED BY UNIVERSIDAD TECNOLOGICA DE MATAMOROS

 

Nobel Prize in Chemistry brought together students and personalities from Tamaulipas and the Valley of Texas.

With great success, the Technological University of Matamoros presented the Nobel Prize in Chemistry, Dr. Mario Molina, who gave the great conference «Climate Change and Sustainable Development», during an event in which the Secretaries of Education in Tamaulipas, Dr. Diódoro Guerra Rodríguez and of the Environment and Urban Development, Engineer René Salinas Treviño, accompanied by the rector of UTM, Engineer José Antonio Tovar Lara, welcomed him on behalf of the state governor, Engineer Egidio Torre Cantú.

The important conference brought together more than 1,800 students from technological universities from all over the state, Polytechnic Universities, Technological Institutes, elementary and high school institutions, researchers, as well as institutions from Texas such as UTB, Panam, among others.

Also present were the Undersecretaries of Higher and Higher Education, Julio Martinez Burnes and the Undersecretary General of Government, Guadalupe Flores Valdez; rectors of Technological and Polytechnic Universities, Technological Institutes; delegates from federal agencies related to the environment and the civil society of Matamoros.

In this context, the Secretary of Education in Tamaulipas, Dr. Diódoro Guerra Rodríguez welcomed Dr. Mario Molina, to whom he expressed «for the academic community of Tamaulipas is very honored to receive the Nobel Prize in Chemistry and advisor to President Barack Obama, with a lecture on the subject of climate change and sustainable development of which he is an expert and who has dedicated as an outstanding scientist, many years of his life, generating knowledge and discoveries that have meant one of the most valuable contributions to the sustainability of the planet and the survival of humanity».

Egidio Torre Cantú establishes sustainable development as one of the 4 guiding principles of his government, which translates into policies and actions to guarantee society the conservation of its natural resources, the care of the environment and the preservation of the ecology, and which are supported through research projects in our centers and Institutes of Higher Education, educational programs at all levels and culture on the subject for the whole society.

Later, the rector of the Technological University of Matamoros, Mr. José Antonio Tovar Lara, addressed the approximately 2,000 attendees, to whom he reaffirmed the commitment of the institution he directs to continue promoting scientific and technological events such as the conference «Climate Change and Sustainable Development» by Dr. Mario Molina, who is a pioneer and one of the world’s leading researchers in atmospheric chemistry.

He then highlighted the Mexican scientist’s work and contribution to science, which has allowed him to be awarded the Gold Medal of the Italian Presidency; the Tyler Prize for Energy and Ecology in 1983; the United Nations Sasakawa Prize in 1999 and the Nobel Prize in Chemistry in 1995.

He is currently one of the 21 scientists who are part of the Council of Advisors on Science and Technology to the President of the United States, Barack Obama. In addition, last November 20, the U.S. President presented him with the Presidential Medal of Freedom, the highest award given by the U.S. government to a civilian.

It was the turn of UTM’s Rector to introduce Dr. Mario Molina to the excited audience that gathered to listen to his lecture «Climate Change and Sustainable Development».

At the end of the presentation, Mr. René Salinas Treviño thanked the Mexican scientist on behalf of the governor of the state, Mr. Egidio Torre Cantú, for his presence in Tamaulipas.

At the same time he expressed that sustainable Tamaulipas as the axis of the state development plan contemplates climate change as one of the great challenges, together with the loss of biodiversity faced by human beings; in this sense, he added, society and government will work together to induce strategies aimed at sustainability.

At the end of his message and accompanied by Dr. Diódoro Guerra and Eng. José Antonio Tovar Lara presented Dr. Mario Molina with an award sent by the Governor of Tamaulipas, Eng. Egidio Torre Cantú, while the Technological University of Matamoros also thanked him for accepting the invitation to share some of the research carried out for an environmental improvement on the planet.
