ASTRONOMER GIVES LECTURE AT UTM TO PROMOTE SCIENTIFIC INTEREST AMONG STUDENTS

To promote scientific interest among students, the Technological University of Matamoros presented the conference entitled «Astronomy of the XXI Century: Large Telescopes» given by Dr. Alfredo Santillan Gonzalez, who is a member of the International Astronomical Union (IAU) and the National System of Researchers of the National Council of Science and Technology (Conacyt).
The conference, which was attended by UTM Rector José Antonio Tovar Lara, was attended by students from the different careers offered at the university, including Mechatronics, Information and Communication Technologies, Industrial Processes, International Business Operations, Project Management, among others.
In the didactic talk with the students, the astrophysicist discussed different topics, such as the research being done in medicine for the early detection of breast cancer through space technology.
He also explained that thanks to the Hubble Space Telescope orbiting the earth at 593 kilometers above sea level, it has been possible to observe exoplanets, mini-galaxies, and explosions of stars that are light years away from the earth.
These were some of the topics covered by Dr. Santillan, who is currently a senior researcher at the General Directorate of Computing and Information and Communication Technologies, as well as a computing advisor to the General Directorate for the Dissemination of Science at UNAM.
At the end of the talk with the students, the rector of UTM, Eng. José Antonio Tovar Lara, presented Dr. Santillan Gonzalez with an award for promoting scientific interest among students.
